# Sliding screen door won't slide? What to check, and when a new door makes sense

Most sliding screen doors that stick have a dirty track, and vacuuming it is the first thing to try yourself. If the door still drags, jumps its track or flexes, look at the frame: when the frame is straight and sound, we rescreen it with fresh mesh, and when it is bent, racked or too short for the opening, we build a custom new sliding screen door measured to the opening.

Key takeaways

- Dirt in the [bottom track](https://a-affordablescreen.com/glossary/#t-bottom-track) is the most common reason a screen door drags, so vacuum it before you do anything else.
- Never oil the track; lubricant on it attracts more grime.
- A bent, racked or undersized door keeps jumping the track; a [custom new sliding screen door](https://a-affordablescreen.com/services/sliding-screen-doors/) measured to the opening is the lasting answer.
- If the frame is straight and sound, [rescreening](https://a-affordablescreen.com/services/screen-repair-rescreening/) puts fresh mesh in the existing frame.

## Find the cause first

Slide the door slowly through its full travel and watch where and how it misbehaves. The pattern usually points at the cause.

Sliding screen door symptoms, likely causes and what to do Symptom Likely cause What to do

Drags and scrapes along the bottom Dirt packed in the track or on the wheels Vacuum the track and wipe it clean

Jumps off the track or rattles loose at the top The door is too short for the opening, or the frame is bent Measure the gap; a door made to the measured opening stays put

Slides well in one spot, sticks in another A dent or debris in the track at that spot Clear the debris and look at the track

Tight at one end, loose at the other A frame out of square Measure the diagonals to check the frame

Grinds or wobbles A worn door that has been used hard for years A custom new sliding screen door

Bows or flexes as you slide it A bent frame, often from being pushed or blown off the track A custom new sliding screen door built to the measured opening

Track damage on the patio door itself (crushed, split or worn through) is part of the patio door, not the screen.

## What you can check yourself

Work through these in order. You need a vacuum with a hose attachment, a damp cloth and, for a tall door, a helper. None of this is a promise that the door will slide again; it tells you what you are dealing with.

- Vacuum the track. Use a hose attachment on the bottom and top tracks, then wipe them with a damp cloth and brush grit off the door's wheels. Do not oil the track.
- Slide the door slowly. Watch where it drags, rattles or lifts. A problem in one spot points to the track there; a problem everywhere points to the door.
- Look at the track. Check the bottom rail and the top track for dents, debris and rust. A track that is crushed, split or worn through belongs to the patio door itself.
- Measure the diagonals. Take the door out, lay it flat and measure corner to corner both ways. A big difference means the frame is out of square.
- Check the frame and mesh. Look for bent rails, loose corners and a frame that flexes as you push it. Note whether the mesh is torn or sagging.
- Decide. If the frame is straight and sound, rescreening gives it fresh mesh. If it is bent, racked or too short for the opening, a custom new sliding screen door measured to the opening is the lasting answer.

## Cleaning the track

Dirt is the usual culprit. This Old House quotes a service manager who calls dirt in the track and on the wheels the number-one cause, and recommends vacuuming the track with a hose attachment and wiping it with a damp cloth. Reno-Sparks dust and wind-blown grit build up fast in a bottom track, so this is worth doing every season. Our guide to the [Washoe Zephyr](https://a-affordablescreen.com/guides/washoe-zephyr-wind-and-screens/) explains why afternoon wind is hard on patio doors here.

Do not oil or grease the track itself; This Old House notes lubricant on the track attracts more grime. While you are down at track level, look at the [pile weatherstrip](https://a-affordablescreen.com/glossary/#t-pile-weatherstrip) along the door edges. Matted or torn pile lets bugs past and can catch on the frame as the door slides.

## Checking the track

Run a fingertip along the rail where the door sticks. A raised burr or a flattened section is easy to feel even when it is hard to see. Check the top track too: a screen door hangs partly from it, and a bent top lip lets the door pop out in the wind.

A track that is crushed, split or worn through is part of the patio door, not the screen.

## When the door itself is the problem

This Old House's advice is that a badly bent or racked frame needs replacing. A frame that has been knocked off the track a few times, or one built from a thin frame that flexes, will keep coming off. The same goes for a door that is simply the wrong size for the opening, such as a store-bought door stretched to its limit. At that point a new door made to the measured opening is the lasting answer. Our [sliding screen door sizes guide](https://a-affordablescreen.com/guides/sliding-screen-door-sizes/) explains why height matters so much.

To check a frame, lay the door flat and measure corner to corner in both directions. If the two diagonals differ by more than a small amount, the door is out of square. Our [rescreen or replace guide](https://a-affordablescreen.com/guides/rescreen-or-replace/) uses the same test on window screens.

## Latches and handles

A door that slides well but will not stay shut is a latch question, not a track question. The [screen door latch](https://a-affordablescreen.com/glossary/#t-screen-door-latch) has to line up with the [keeper](https://a-affordablescreen.com/glossary/#t-keeper) on the jamb. Our [handles and latches guide](https://a-affordablescreen.com/guides/sliding-screen-door-handles-and-latches/) explains how they work.

## Keeping it sliding

- Vacuum the bottom track whenever you clean the patio, and after a windy week.
- Open and close the screen door with the handle, not by pushing on the mesh or the frame edge.
- Close it gently. Slamming a screen door into the jamb loosens the corners over time.
- If a strong gust knocks it off the track, check that the frame is still straight before putting it back.
- If a dog pushes through the mesh, consider [pet-resistant screen](https://a-affordablescreen.com/services/pet-screens/) at the next rescreen. The [pet-proof screens guide](https://a-affordablescreen.com/guides/pet-proof-screens/) compares the options.

## Rescreen or a new door: making the call

A door with a straight frame, sound corners and torn or sagging mesh is a good candidate for [rescreening](https://a-affordablescreen.com/services/screen-repair-rescreening/): new mesh is rolled into the existing frame with new spline, or with the same spline reused when it is still good. A door that is bent, racked or too short for the opening is better replaced.

A-Affordable Screen builds custom sliding screen doors in 80-inch and 96-inch heights and any width, in heavy-duty material, measured on site, across [Sparks](https://a-affordablescreen.com/service-areas/sparks/), [Reno](https://a-affordablescreen.com/service-areas/reno/) and [Spanish Springs](https://a-affordablescreen.com/service-areas/spanish-springs/). Our [screen doors page](https://a-affordablescreen.com/screen-doors/) has the details, and the [screen door cost guide](https://a-affordablescreen.com/guides/window-screen-and-screen-door-cost/) shows published price ranges. Questions

## Straight answers

### Should I spray WD-40 or oil on the track?

No. Lubricant on the track collects dirt and makes things worse. Vacuum the track and wipe it with a damp cloth.

### Why does my screen door keep falling off the track?

Usually the frame is bent or the door is too short for the opening. A custom new sliding screen door measured to the opening stays on its track.

### Can you rescreen my sliding screen door instead of replacing it?

Yes, when the frame is straight and the corners are sound. New mesh goes into the existing frame, and we look at the frame first to be sure it is worth keeping.

### How do I tell if the frame is bent?

Lay the door flat and measure corner to corner both ways. If the two diagonals differ by more than a small amount, or the door flexes as you slide it, the frame is out of square.

### Is it the door or the track?

Slide the door slowly and watch. If it sticks at one spot, look at the track there. If it drags everywhere, the door itself is the more likely cause.

### What does a custom new sliding screen door cost?

It depends on the size and the mesh, and we price it after measuring the opening on site. Our cost guide shows published market ranges.
